The finch sock is a great, inexpensive way to feed clinging birds.  These will work with Nyjer (thistle) or a finch mix, and can hang from just about anywhere.  The finches, chickadees, nuthatches, pine siskins, and sometimes even a woodpecker, will cling to the mesh and pick the seed through.  These work really well from the suction cup wondow hooks as a window feeder.
